Hiking in the alpine Dragonlake of Mount Timfi is one of the most impressive attractions of Zagori.
The hike starts from the village of Mikro Papigko in an uphill, wonderful forest. As we leave the green forest, we come across the alpine scenery and the outstanding rock formations, known as the ‘Towers of Astraka’.
As soon as we reach Astraka’s mountain refuge, located at an altitude of 1950 m, we will enjoy a lunch and then continue our hike towards the mythical dragonlake. The north side of the lake offers breathtaking views of the Smolikas mountain range and Aoos valley, whereas the east side offers wonderful views of the northwest Gamilla Mount.

The ascent to Timfi's Dragon lake is considered moderately challenging. It involves trekking through mountainous terrain, and hikers should be in very good physical condition and have some hiking experience.
The best period to undertake the ascent is from May 20th to mid-July and from early September to late October.
While experienced hikers may navigate the trails independently, it is recommended, especially for those unfamiliar with the area, to hire a local guide for safety and to enhance the overall experience.
Essential equipment includes sturdy hiking boots covering the ankle, weather-appropriate clothing, a backpack with your essentials like water, snacks, medication etc.
The ascent to Timfi's Dragon lake can take approximately 5 hours, depending on the hiker's pace and physical condition.

We normally do not operate the Dragon lake hike during winter months due to weather conditions. In case weather allows for a winter ascent, you must have previous proven winter hiking experience, excellent fitness level and all required personal equipment.
