Canoe Kayak in Lake Pournari

Between Arta and Tzoumerka mountain range, lies Lake Pournari. It is an artificial lake, created by the construction of a dam on Arachthos river, near the settlement of Pournari after which both have been named. The dam is the second largest dam in Greece - measuring 107 meters high, 580 meters long and 450 meters wide - and holds the waters of Arachthos thus also controlling the flow of the river. The lake is "home" for many varieties of fish such as carp, brian, wild trout and eels and also provides shelter for many birds such as mallards, kingfishers and little ringed plovers.

Our Canoe Kayak trip in Lake Pournari is available with single, two-seater or three-seater canoes, depending on the composition and the desires of each group. We paddle around the area where Arachthos river merges with the lake. The lush green shoreline forms lacy fiords creating a fairytalelike scenery.  Of particular interest is the part of the submerged settlement of Kato Kalentini, which was abandoned and sunk when the dam was created. When the water level is high we paddle just above the 120 year old sunken settlement, however when the waters are low, the settlement resurfaces creating a mysterious setting.
