Hiking / Crossing Agali Gorge

Join us to discover the hidden beauties of Evia by crossing one of the most beautiful hiking gorges in Greece!

Agali gorge is one of the most beautiful gorges of Evia, heading to the summit of Dirfis, passing through many, small but worthwhile habitats. Its length reaches 6 kilometers, while it is characteristic of the rich vegetation that includes: alpine pine, shrubby plants (holly, oregano, thyme, rosemary and many others), perennial plane trees, buds and flowers. Close to the summit starts a cephalonian fir forest. The longest length of the gorge runs through a stream that forms beautiful lakes and waterfalls. This stream originates from the sources Arkoudovrysi and Kryovrysi, in the gorge, which are the main sources of river Messapis. The name "Agali", as the locals say comes from "agali" (means slowly in greek), as in many narrow and uphill spots, hikers have to walk slowly.

We will start from the Agali Refuge (930m) and descend through the gorge towards its entrance, near the village of Agios Athanasios. The route within the gorge is downhill, crossing slopes and sub-alpine meadows. Our first stop is the Kratia spring, at 730 meters, where a giant plane tree stands out. The landscape gradually changes as we encounter plane trees, then firs, and later pines. We continue to our next stop, the Kryovrisi spring, where a beautiful stone fountain with fresh, flowing water awaits us! As the gorge narrows, towering, impressive cliffs rise beside us. We cross the river via metal bridges that have replaced the old wooden ones. Filled with unforgettable images, we reach the village of Agios Athanasios (190m).
