A place of extraordinary beauty and natural wonder!
In the heart of Western Macedonia, Grevena is a destination where nature, history and adventure meet. Its vast forests, rugged mountains, rivers and traditional villages give nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts something to explore in every season.
One of the region’s greatest natural treasures is Pindus National Park, also known as Valia Calda, one of Greece’s most spectacular and unspoilt wilderness areas. Stretching between the regions of Grevena and Ioannina, the park encompasses the Valia Calda valley, the Arkoudorema stream, and the Lygos and Mavrovouni mountain ranges.
The name Valia Calda means "warm valley" in the local Vlach language, although the area remains covered in snow for much of the winter. Dense beech and black pine forests, steep cliffs, rushing streams and amazing mountain scenery make this a truly remarkable place to explore. The national park is also home to a rich variety of plants and wildlife, providing an important refuge for rare species, including the brown bear.
But Grevena has far more to offer. The Spilaio Gorge and its surrounding trails are ideal for hiking and outdoor adventure, while the region’s 17 traditional stone bridges, among them the renowned Aziz Aga and Spanos bridges, tell the story of its history and architectural heritage.
In Milia, Grevena, the Palaeontological Museum houses remarkable prehistoric mastodon fossils, including record-breaking tusks recognised by Guinness World Records. During winter, Vasilitsa Ski Resort draws skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, while traditional Vlach villages such as Samarina offer a taste of local culture and mountain life.
And of course, no trip to Grevena is complete without its food. Known as the “City of Mushrooms”, Grevena is famous for the wide variety of wild mushrooms that grow in its forests, a defining part of the region’s culinary identity.
