Hiking to the temple of Epicurius Apollo

The hike to Epicurius Apollo temple, is a day guided trekking activity to the temple of the God of healing and the sun!

At 1.130 meters, in the heart of the Peloponnese (at the meeting point of the prefectures of Messinia, Helia, Arcadia) dominates the imposing temple of Epicurean Apollo. It is one of the best-preserved temples of antiquity whose construction is attributed to Iktinos, architect of the Parthenon. The temple was dedicated by the Phigalians to Apollo because he helped them overcome a plague epidemic. In 1986 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Although nowadays it is covered by a sunshade tent, to protect it from the strong winds and the snow load, you can still feel the grandeur and the energy released in this magical spot. The marble carvings of the temple, with depictions of the battles of Amazons and Centaurs, is thought to be an art a piece by sculptor Peonius, and is nowadays exhibited at the British Museum.

The starting point of our route is the village of Neda. Crossing the green slopes, we pass the single-arched stone bridge of Berekla and hike next to the stream which is dominated by plane-trees. We enjoy their rich shade until we reach the Tritseli spring. From here our path continues to the square of Ambeliona, where we make a short stop. Crossing a particularly dense chestnut forest, we end up at an amazing point, where we enjoy the unique view of Mount Lykaion and Tetrazi. At the highest point of the path, at Stavrouli, you can choose to either visit the church of Agios Iakovos, the Filiatro spring or Vigla peak.

We continue via a small plateau till the village of Skliro, where you can see the statue of Nicolaos Bozinakis, a local chief of the Greek Independence War. This is where the last part of our route begins to finally end at the impressive Temple of Epicurius Apollo that unfolds before us, as our generous reward for this journey.
