Koziakas, also known as Kerketeus Mountain, is said—according to ancient tradition—to be the place where Asclepius, the god of medicine, gathered the herbs and plants he used to prepare his remedies.
Part of the Pindus mountain range, Koziakas stretches from Kalabaka to the town of Pyli, forming a striking, rocky ridge with panoramic views of the Thessalian plain, Mount Olympus, Mount Kissavos, Lake Plastira and the Agrafa mountains, as well as the Tzoumerka range.
Its highest peak, known as Astrapi or Hatzipetrou, rises to 1,901 meters. Just below the summit, nestled on a stunning alpine plateau, lies the Koziakas mountain refuge.
Our journey begins in Thessaloniki, heading towards the parking area of the Pertouli ski center—approximately a 3.5-hour drive. From there, we’ll start our hike across the famous Pertouli meadows, following a trail that leads through forests of deciduous trees at lower elevations, and fir, Scots pine, and cedar trees as we gain altitude.
On the first day, we’ll hike about 6 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 740 meters, reaching the Koziakas refuge. After a short break, we’ll continue with an ascent to the peak of Astrapi at 1,901 meters, adding another 1.6 kilometers (round trip) and 170 meters of elevation gain.
On day two, we’ll retrace the same trail back to our vehicles and head to Meteora for a brief stop. There, we’ll enjoy a short hike and some free time for lunch.
We’ll then return to Thessaloniki, carrying with us beautiful images, enriching experiences, and the magic of nature.
