A fun river crossing, with swimming & diving, in the impressive gorge of Kleftis, in mt Orliaka.
Orliakas is a low mountain in the southwest of Grevena prefecture. An area of natural beauty surrounded by rushing rivers, verdant slopes and large streams. On this mountain, Velonias river carved over time the beautiful Gorge of Liatissa or as is otherwise known the Gorge of Kleftis (in Greek bandit / thief). According to legend, during the Turkish domination a bandit was pursued by the Turks. Reaching the gorge he jumped over the river to the other side, making a promise to himself to build a bridge if he survived. True to his word, he built the beautiful single-arched bridge which still stands there to remind us of the story.
Our route starts near the stone bridge of Katsogiannis, where the entrance of the gorge is located and finishes at the natural exit, just before the stone Bridge of Kleftis or Liatissa.
The gorge is about 1.000 meters long, while its width does not exceed 3-4 meters. It is a narrow gorge, with imposing vertical cliffs reaching 150 meters and... in many places it is so narrow that the sun's rays do not reach the bottom!
The crossing has no technical difficulties and does not require the use of ropes. However all participants wear a helmet, life jacket and neoprene suit (when required) during the crossing.
