The famous "Odondotos" Rack Railway
A trademark of the city is the serrated road that connects Kalavrita with Diakopto, since 1896. The train is so harmoniously tied to the environment that it seems as if it has always been there, being part of nature. The ride is so beautiful, as the funicular passes through the impressive Vouraikos Gorge, that it has been described as "the most spectacular rail route" of the Balkan area.
Chelmos and the Kalavrita Ski Centre
Chelmos, the third highest mountain in the Peloponnese after Taygetos and Ziria, receives a large number of visitors. During the winter months, the north side of the mountain is flooded with skiers and hikers who visit the Kalavrita Ski Centre. With altitudes ranging from 1,700 to 2,340 metres, it caters for all skill levels and is a top winter destination close to major urban centres.
The captivating Monastery of the Holy Cave
The imposing Monastery of the Holy Cave is considered the oldest in Greece and is built in the opening of a large natural cave, on the almost vertical front of a 120 m high rock, above the steep gorge of the Vouraikos River. It is truly a sight you must admire up-close!
