Just an hour away from the heart of Attica, we encounter the tallest mountain in the region, Parnitha. It also happens to be the only National Park that is located so close to a major urban center. Despite its tumultuous history, marked by wildfires in recent years, Parnitha continues to be a destination for mountain enthusiasts, offering numerous possibilities for thrilling outdoor activities.
#DidYouKnow 🧐
This area was first inhabited during the Mycenaean period and has always been a key point in the defense of Attica. It was, in fact, the most fortified mountain in ancient Greece. Parnitha covers an area of approximately 300 square kilometers and is home to around 30 species of mammals and 120 bird species. Additionally, it boasts approximately 800 different plant species and herbs. A characteristic animal of Parnitha is the Red Deer, Cervus elaphus.
The Cave of Panos ⛰️
On the slopes of the Goura Gorge, at an altitude of about 700 meters, you will find the Cave of Panos. This sacred cave was dedicated to Pan, the goat-legged god of ancient times, who served as the protector of mountains, forests, caves, and shepherds. An exploration of this cave has revealed 2,000 lamps, bronze coins, and tools, affirming its religious significance. The cave is open to visitors and suitable for speleology enthusiasts.
The Fortress of Fili and the Monastery of Kliston ♖
A tour of the monuments in the region inevitably leads us to the Kliston Monastery. This Byzantine church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was built in the 14th century in a particularly imposing location. In the southern extremities of Parnitha, southwest of the source of Agia Paraskevi, you will find another significant monument of the region. Here stands the wall from early historical times, which played a crucial political role in the 6th century BC, known as the Fortress of Fili.
