Smolikas, the second highest mountain in Greece, is located in the northern part of the Pindus range, between the regions of Ioannina and Grevena. It is a unique mountain with impressive geomorphology and a strong alpine character.
Its slopes are covered with tall Bosnian pine and black pine, while below its highest peak lies the famous Drakolimni, a lake with a distinctive heart shape. On clear days, the views from the summit are truly breathtaking.
At the foot of the mountain, traditional Vlach villages can be found, where authentic architecture and the warm hospitality of the locals add character to the area and complete the outdoor experience.

Our day begins at 7:30 AM with departure from Thessaloniki. We meet at Pades before heading down to Milopotamos Waterfall, following a downhill trail through lush vegetation. Afterwards, we continue to the Smolikas Shelter. The final part of the route, from Palioseli to the shelter, is a dirt road but remains accessible by a regular vehicle.
Our day begins at 07:00 with breakfast at the mountain refuge, followed by our hike towards Dragon Lake. There, we take a break to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the raw beauty of the alpine landscape.
Weather permitting, we continue our ascent to the summit of “Geros,” the second highest peak in Greece. After completing our hike at around 15:30, we return via the same trail back to the refuge. We then depart for Thessaloniki, with an estimated arrival between 20:30 and 21:00.
Accommodation is in large tents set up on specially prepared platforms, each equipped with mattresses and blankets and accommodating up to 6 people, with limited availability. Other participants will stay in tents provided by us in a designated area near the shelter.
The location is truly magical, and spending the afternoon on the mountain offers a unique experience, filled with beautiful scenery and unforgettable moments.
