Day 6 of 8 Days Sea Kayaking in the Dodecanese sees us on our longest ferry ride to the most eastern point of the Greece.
Kastellorizo, Castello Rosso or Megisti as it is also known– awaits for us to explore it!
This tiny island has the most amazing hidden sea cave ever found in Europe. Amazingly it is 40 – 50 metres long, 25 – 30 metres wide & 20 – 25 metres high. Through its tiny entrance, we paddle in, and explore this amazing blue grotto. The light of the sun reflects in the interior of the cave, thereby producing a dazzling azure colour. Words cannot describe the scenery – we can only hope our photos will! Today we are not alone as sea turtles abound in this area, so be sure to keep an eye out for them!
After our visit, it is again time to indulge in a delicious lunch, this time in the quiet village of Kastellorizo, overlooking the Turkish Coast. After our leisurely lunch we head back to Rhodes.
Miles: 7
Duration: 4 hours
Actual Paddling time: 3 hours
Ferry trip: 4 hrs & 40 minutes (round trip)
Οvernight stay on Rhodes
As the day trip to Kastellorizo can only be conducted once a week, in the event of unsuitable weather conditions for paddling or limitations of ferry services (the ferry does not operate the trip Rhodes - Kastelorizo - Rhodes after mid-October), we will substitute Kastellorizo for Chalki.
Alternative Day’s description : Today we will start from the small port of Kamiros Skala in the morning, from where we will depart by boat to Halki. After about an hour of sailing in the Aegean Sea, we will approach this small island that manages to enchant every visitor. In 1983, UNESCO designated Chalki as the “island of peace and friendship.
After disembarking from the boat, we will begin with our sea kayaks the exploration of the coastline – from Emporios to Ftenaya, Pontamos, the peninsula under the Medieval Castle of the Knights of Agios Ioannis and Trachia beach. Today we are not alone as seals & dolphins abound in this area, so be sure to keep an eye out for them! . We will have many opportunities for diving and exploring the seabed as well as for walks in the beautiful settlement of Chalki after our return to the port. After our visit, it is again time to indulge in a delicious lunch, this time in the quiet village of Emborios, overlooking Alimia. After our leisurely lunch we head back to Rhodes. At the afternoon the ship will depart from Chalki towards Rhodes.
