Overview

The Dolomites are located on the border between Italy and Austria and are part of the Southern Alps and a natural border between the two countries.

Their name comes from the homonymous type of rock that gave these mountains their characteristic shapes and colours.

During the First World War it was a battlefield for warfare, with the construction of mountain paths on the steep cliffs, with galleries and passages equipped with wire ropes and bridges.

These historic mountain paths (via ferrata = iron road) are now used for tourist purposes and have been extended to all the Alps and other mountains of the world, while all the peaks of the Dolomites are a destination of worldwide climbing interest.

The Dolomites are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This trip is organized for the EOS Athens, wanting to give the opportunity to those who are interested to gain experience of demanding Alpine routes and together to experience an exciting adventure that will be unforgettable, with the guidance of experienced guides and absolute safety, without requiring any experience.

The only requirements are good physical condition and not to be afraid of the gap, while previous climbing knowledge is considered useful, but not necessary.

General Information

Accommodation - Meals

Accommodation is provided in mountain huts, in shared dormitories with bunk beds. The huts have toilets; some also have showers (with cold water) and electrical outlets. The lodge provides blankets, and you should bring a liner or a very compact sleeping bag. Meals at the lodges include breakfast and dinner. One night will be spent at a 3-star hotel in Cortina in triple rooms with private bathrooms and breakfast.

Transportation

Local transportation is provided by an 8+1-seater minibus and a smaller 5-seater car. Airfare is not included in the price and tickets will be issued once the minimum number of participants is confirmed. Therefore, reservations should be finalized as soon as possible to ensure the lowest possible cost.

Program Changes

Our tour guides have the discretion to modify the itinerary if weather or other local conditions (strikes, political unrest, etc.) necessitate it, with the primary consideration being the smooth running of the program and the safety of the participants. Any additional costs arising from such changes (for example, accommodation at a different location than the one originally booked) are covered by the participants.

Climate

The climate in the Dolomites is generally better than in the rest of the Alps, with less rainfall, especially during the time of our trip. Summer months have temperatures ranging from 10–25°C, with about one-third of the days each month being rainy. At higher elevations, it is often quite windy, causing the wind chill to drop dramatically, possibly even close to freezing.

Health – Safety – Insurance

The trip requires very methodical and strict adherence to the procedures for navigating a via ferrata route. The trip guides will help you follow the procedures, and you must comply with their instructions.

The cost of the trip includes helicopter rescue insurance in case of an unexpected incident in the mountains. However, it does not include travel insurance, which you will need to arrange on your own if desired.

At the link below, you can view the benefits of the available plans and contact our insurance advisor to address any questions you may have regarding coverage: Add Value Travel Insurance

FAQs

What are the requirements for participating in the trip, and what are my responsibilities during the trip?

Due to the nature of the program, all participants must be in good physical condition and have no fear of heights.
Knowledge of how to use safety equipment (climbing harness, helmet, belay device) is essential.
It is also important to be familiar with moving in mountainous terrain and on slopes with loose gravel and unstable rocks.
Finally, we must be punctual for scheduled times and follow the guides’ instructions.
With a positive attitude and everyone’s cooperation, every trip can turn into an unforgettable
experience, and often leads to lasting friendships that stay with us for a lifetime.

I’m not an experienced hiker. Can I join this trip? How difficult are the trails or activities on the itinerary?

The via ferrata routes included in the program do not require technical climbing skills.
The only requirement is that you not be afraid of heights, as many sections of the routes are very exposed, even on vertical cliffs.
For anyone who has never participated in a similar activity before, we recommend taking part in a similar program in Greece before joining the trip.

How much money should I bring with me?

The additional cost covers extra snacks and meals that are not included, and we estimate this amount to be approximately €20 per day

How easy is it to make calls from my cell phone?

Up in the mountains, cell phone service is available at only a few points along the route. There are usually spots near the mountain huts where there is network coverage; your tour guide, who knows these spots, will be able to help you.

How is our luggage transported?

Participants are responsible for carrying their own gear. And since we’ll need to carry our backpacks with all our equipment along the trails, the contents should be limited to the absolute essentials. This backpack will also serve as our carry-on luggage on flights, with a maximum weight limit of 8 kilograms.

Does your agency handle the issuance of airline tickets?

Our office can handle the booking of airline tickets. Once the group is finalized, we will let you know the cost of the booking we can arrange, and you can decide accordingly.

How experienced is the escort?

The lead guide for the trip is a mountain guide and is very familiar with all the via ferrata and hiking routes included in the itinerary. The second guide also has experience guiding via ferrata routes and has completed the same routes before.
