Overview

It is no coincidence that Nepal is characterized as the Mecca of hiking and mountaineering tourism. 8 of the 14 peaks over 8,000 meters in the world are located here, while there are still thousands of lower peaks, while the scenery is complemented by deep ravines, rushing rivers, and countless villages.

The area of the country is slightly larger than Greece, but it has three times the population and outside Kathmandu it has few other major cities, so the vast bulk of the population still lives in the villages.

The dramatic terrain, combined with the delayed course of development, results in a very limited road network and correspondingly a huge network of trails, so extensive that even Nepalis are not fully aware.

Some of the routes have been known for decades, when hiking tourism began to develop, and some of the most popular ones have become so crowded that they are now characterized by hiking trafficking.

This trekking follows a route that has not yet been affected by the development of other regions and remains an authentic adventure in Nepal. We will cross the wild ravine of the Modi Khola River and reach the heart of the massif of Annapurna with dozens of peaks rising impressively around us and we will reach an altitude of 4,200 m.

The program also includes a visit to Pokhara and a tour of the main attractions of the Kathmandu Valley, while we will also take the time to wander around the endless market of Thamel.

Activities / Schedule

Flight to Kathmandu

Departure time 09:55 with Turkish Airlines for Istanbul, where we arrive at 11:20. With our next flight departing in the evening to Kathmandu at 20:20, we have plenty of time for a walk around the city

Arrival in Kathmandu and visit

Arrival in Kathmandu in the morning at 06:05. After the necessary entry formalities into the country, departure for a visit to two of the main attractions of the city. First in line is the Swayambhunath (also known as the monkey temple after the monkeys that roam everywhere), atop a wooded hill filled with temples and views of the city. Next is Kathmandu Durbar Square, which is also filled with temples and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Here you will be given plenty of time for wandering and photography, before returning to the hotel.

The hotel is located in the Thamel district, in the heart of the market, filled with shops selling an incredible variety of souvenirs, cafes and restaurants, mixed with small temples, colors and aromas. Accommodation will take place at Hotel Arts 3* or similar, in double rooms with bathroom and breakfast.

Transfer to Pokhara

Departure by private bus to Pokhara, and from there to the settlement of Pothana or Dhampus, a journey that takes about 8 hours. Overnight stay at an inn.

Route in the village of Tolka (1790 m.)

After breakfast, we start our hike, following a smoothly uphill path. Our first target is the col Deurali (2,167 m), from where you can see the first impressive images of the great peaks, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, etc. Descending from the north side to the valley of the Modi Khola river, arrival at the village of Tolka where the first overnight stay in a lodge will take place

6 km course, duration 3-4 hours, altitude +300m, – 550 m

Route to Jhinu Danda (1340 m)

Walking along the Modi Khola River to Jhinu Danda, a settlement above the river surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

In the afternoon those interested can visit the hot springs about one km further up the river, for a hot Himalayan bath.

Course 8.6 km, duration 4-5 hours, altitude +650m, – 690 m

Route in Sinuwa (2360 m)

Starting the day, a prolonged uphill path leads to the village of Chhomrong (2,170 m) at the foot of Hiunchuli Mountain. Then it descends again to the village of Sinuwa where we will spend the night in a lodge.

Course 6 km, duration 4 hours, altitude +740 m -390 m

Route to Himalaya settlement (2920 m)

Continuing the ascent after breakfast, the route enters the deep ravine of the Modi Khola River with the slopes of the mountains closing right left in a wild and beautiful landscape with lush vegetation. In the past this route was used only by shepherds and had little infrastructure, but now it has settlements, inns and tea shops for short stops and rest drinking a hot tea.

Today's destination is the settlement of Himalaya (2,920 m)

Course 10 km, duration 6 hours, altitude +1060 m -300 m

Route at Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3700 m.)

The route continues to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700 m), a settlement at the foot of the impressive Machhapuchhre mountain (6993 m). The name of the mountain means "Fish Tail" from the characteristic shape of its twin peak and is a sacred mountain for Nepalis with forbidden climbing to its top.

Day course 6 km, duration 6-8 hours, altitude +1300 m – 500 m

Route to Annapurna Base Camp (4130 m)

Today has a relatively short course, with final destination the Annapurna S. Base Camp (4,100 m). The trail runs parallel to the maraina of the glacier that descends from the giant Annapurna 1 (8091 m) which rises above us and reaches the heart of the amphitheater with dozens of peaks of the Annapurna complex closing the horizon around. Among them is the peak Annapurna South which was the target of the first Greek mountaineering expedition in the Himalayas of Nepal in 1985.  Because of the altitude and its potential implications for the adaptation of some, the current course must be slow. Arriving at today's lodge, there will be plenty of leisurely time to devote himself to the spectacle that surrounds, or for short walks in the area.

3 km ascent course, duration 2.5 hours, altitude +450 m

Route to Bamboo (2130 m)

After breakfast begins our descent following the same path, with destination the village of Bamboo where we will spend the night in a lodge.

Course 14 km, duration 7 hours, altitude +570 m -2.380 m

Completion of trekking and return to Pokhara

Following a slightly different path, trekking is completed near the river at New Bridge where a road reaches.

11 km course, duration 6 hours, altitude +770 m – 1370 m.

From here by car we will continue to Pokhara (60 km, 2 hours)

Transfer to the hotel Adam 3* or similar near the lake for overnight stay in rooms with bathroom and breakfast.

Accommodation / food

Accommodation in Kathmandu and Pokhara takes place in 3* hotels in rooms with bathroom and breakfast. During trekking, accommodation takes place in mountain inns where it is necessary to use a small and light sleeping bag. Accommodation here offers basic amenities and hot baths are usually not offered inside the rooms, but hot water is offered at an extra charge.

Breakfast is included in all accommodations, while lunch and dinner will be served by everyone at the restaurant of each accommodation

Insurance / insurance

The program is designed so that the ascent to altitude is gradual and to give the body time to adapt to the altitude.

The cost of the trip includes Basic travel insurance, which covers various contingencies such as health contingencies (eg injury on a course at an altitude of up to 3,000 m, which requires transportation and hospitalization), missed flight and other cases, even coverage of total cancellation of the trip for an amount up to 5,000 € including cancellation due to covid-19

In the following link you can see the benefits of the program and contact our insurance consultant to answer your questions about Travel Insurance coverage by Trekking Hellas

However, the included travel insurance does not cover evacuation at an altitude above 3,000 meters. And given that the trip takes place in an area with minimal infrastructure, we recommend additional evacuation and rescue insurance coverage.

Trekking Hellas cooperates with Global Rescue which covers incidents at altitudes up to 7,500 m with evacuation services. Follow the link below to buy Global Rescue & Trekking Hellas rescue insurance

Tips

Tipping is an optional gesture that is usually omitted even by happy travelers. However, such a substantial reward to a consistent escort who has exaggerated to offer the best possible to the participants, helps the escort to be happy with his work and maintain his fun and energy

Equipment

Equipment should consist of hiking clothing that effectively protects against sweat and dries quickly, rather than cotton T-shirts & sweatshirts or jeans. The shoes that will be used in trekking should be worn again and there should be certainty that they do not "hit" the foot.
