Kandili, a long, imposing mountain in northwestern Evia, rises proudly with its peaks reaching up to 1246 meters. Overlooking the North Evian Gulf, it carries a rich history filled with legends and myths that stretch back in time. From the ancient Makistos, son of Athamas, to the fire-beacon watchtowers said to have conveyed news of Troy’s fall to Mycenae, Kandili is a mountain full of mystery and hidden corners waiting to be discovered.
Amidst this imposing landscape lies the Alimachi Gorge. Hidden in the heart of the mountain, it starts at an altitude of 300 meters and ends at the beach, where the sea meets the sky, completing our adventure. The gorge, filled with dramatic cliffs and wild natural beauty, is ideal for those seeking the unknown and unexplored. The gorge is connected to a local legend of a woman named Alimachi who lived near the area. Though the details of the legend vary, Alimachi is portrayed as a bold and brave woman, tied to the local history and the region. The name likely originates from this folklore, passed down through generations, lending the gorge a mythical aura.
Our adventure begins with an uphill hike that may seem challenging, but the reward is priceless: the view from above, where the steep cliffs of the gorge form a natural path full of challenges. We will face 10 descents – the largest reaching 42 meters, testing both our endurance and technique.
Alimachi Gorge is not suitable for beginners. Moderate to good physical fitness is required, as well as confidence in moving over rugged, rocky terrain.
