We leave the Trekking Hellas 4x4 vehicles just above the Mavrovouni Refuge and begin our hike through a spectacular alpine valley. The trail gradually leads us up towards the summit of Flega, passing through forests of black pine and ancient Bosnian pine. As we gain elevation, views open up towards Lake Aoos, adding to the scenery along the way.
The route is easy and enjoyable, with no technical sections or steep climbs, making it ideal for a relaxed day in the mountains. At the summit of Flega, at 2,159 meters, we take in the open views from the top.
We then descend towards the alpine lakes of Flega, at 1,960 and 1,940 meters. Just 100 meters apart, they create a distinctive landscape and are home to populations of alpine newts.
We return along the same trail, taking in the landscape once more on our way back.
