But what is river trekking exactly?
River trekking, also known as river crossing or river walking, is a gentle outdoor activity suitable for individuals of various skill levels. It involves crossing rivers and streams on foot, allowing you to intimately connect with the natural environment. Unlike canyoning, which emphasizes technical descents, river crossing is characterized by the exploration of waterways, immersing you in the tranquility of flowing currents and picturesque landscapes.
When should I do river trekking?
River crossing can generally be enjoyed from May to September, but the specific timeframe depends on the river's conditions. Some rivers can have high water levels even in May, making them challenging to cross. On the other hand, some rivers may have little to no water in June. The water levels are influenced by the rainfall and snowfall of the year, and prolonged heavy rain can transform an otherwise simple crossing into a dangerous one.
Is river trekking difficult?
A river crossing is considered challenging if it takes more than six hours to complete or involves technical points. Long crossings primarily require good physical fitness, while technical points necessitate the use of belay ropes, climbing, and sometimes rappelling up to a moderate difficulty level. During the months mentioned earlier, the water levels are generally low, but certain areas may still have deep water or rapids. In such cases, a safety rope can be used, but it is essential to emphasize that the rope should never be tied to oneself. Additionally, being an excellent swimmer is a prerequisite for anyone engaging in this activity.
Is river trekking safe?
As always, safety should be the top priority. It is crucial to assess the current water conditions, familiarize yourself with the river's characteristics, and be aware of any potential risks.
