Starting from the Valbona Valley, the route gradually climbs through alpine meadows and wilder mountain terrain, offering wide views and beautiful scenery. As we go higher, the landscape opens up with peaks, steep slopes, and mountain passes.

Valbona Pass – Descent to the Theth Valley

The third day is dedicated to one of the most iconic hikes in the Albanian Alps, the crossing from Valbona to Theth.

This classic trail connects two of the region’s most famous mountain villages, passing through the renowned Valbona Pass. During the ascent, the group enjoys panoramic views of surrounding peaks and the wild alpine landscape.

On the fourth day, we explore Theth and its most important natural and cultural sights. A walk around the village offers the chance to admire the traditional architecture up close and visit the historic, much-photographed church.

Next, we head to the Grunas Waterfall, and if time and conditions allow, we can continue to the Blue Eye of Theth. This day offers beautiful scenery, a more relaxed pace, and an opportunity to connect with the area.

  • Distance: 6–10 km
  • Elevation gain: +250 to +500 m
  • Elevation loss: -250 to -500 m

Afterwards, we head back to Thessaloniki, arriving around 22:00, concluding a five-day trip full of hiking, amazing views, and real mountain experiences.

FAQs

What travel documents are required to participate in the trip?

A valid ID card or passport is required to enter the country.

Is travel insurance required / included?

Travel insurance is not included in the cost of the trip. We recommend contacting our partner office, Add Value, to arrange insurance that covers various unexpected situations, such as injuries requiring transport and hospitalization, missed flights, theft or damage to personal belongings and documents, and even full trip cancellation coverage under certain conditions.

What weather can we expect during the trip?

Albania generally has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. However, in the mountains, the climate varies significantly due to altitude.

In the Albanian Alps, especially in Valbona and Theth, temperatures are lower than in coastal or lowland areas, and weather can change rapidly, even within a single day.

At lower altitudes, like Shkoder and surrounding valleys, summer temperatures often exceed 25°C. At higher altitudes, such as Theth and Valbona, days are usually cooler and nights can be quite cold, especially at the start and end of the hiking season. Afternoon showers or storms are possible, so it’s essential to have waterproof and warm clothing available.

What type of Power Sockets are used in Albania?

Most chargers used in Greece are compatible in Albania, as the country mainly uses Type C and F sockets, common across much of Europe.

During our mountain days in Valbona and Theth, it’s recommended to bring a power bank and use your phone carefully, as charging opportunities may be limited in mountain accommodations or on the trails.

Are tips included?

Tipping is optional and often skipped even by satisfied travelers. However, local staff rely on this gesture, especially during the short mountain tourist season.

We recommend budgeting around €10–20 per person, which will go to our local guides.

What type of accommodation is included?

In Valbona (2 nights), accommodation will be at Kukaj Guesthouse or a similar guesthouse.

In Theth (1 night), accommodation will be at Bujtina Miqesia or a similar guesthouse.

In Shkoder (final night), accommodation will be at Hotel Carmen or a similar hotel.
