We explore Mount Bourinos, a unique and lesser-known mountain destination in Western Macedonia. Bourinos stands out for its rich biodiversity, beautiful forested landscapes and the distinctive Mesiano Nero valley, while its highest peak, Drisinikos, reaches 1,866 metres.
Our adventure begins on Saturday at 06:00 with departure from Thessaloniki. At around 09:00, we arrive at the Bourinos mountain refuge and get ready for our circular hike towards Drisinikos Peak. We then continue towards Mesiano Nero, crossing the mountain’s characteristic landscape before returning to the refuge. The route is approximately 12 km long, with 700 m of elevation gain.
After the hike, a cosy winter evening in the mountains awaits. We spend the night at the Bourinos mountain refuge, surrounded by a peaceful alpine setting with elements of traditional Macedonian architecture, leaving the pace of everyday life behind for a while.
The following morning, after breakfast, we set off for Siatista in Kozani. Built on the slopes of Mount Siniatsiko, at an altitude of approximately 920 metres, Siatista is one of the most characteristic historic towns of Western Macedonia. Walking through its two traditional districts, Chora and Geraneia, we encounter impressive mansions, cobbled streets and distinctive examples of traditional Macedonian architecture.
Our introduction to Siatista continues through its long-standing winemaking tradition. Its vineyards, wineries and famous sun-dried wine are an important part of the town’s identity and have been closely linked to local gastronomy and hospitality for centuries.
At Dio Fili Estate, we enjoy a wine tasting before having some free time to explore the town, discover more of its distinctive architecture and stop for a coffee or a meal at one of its traditional spots.
A winter two-day trip that begins in the mountains of Bourinos and ends among the historic mansions and wines of Siatista, combining hiking, mountain landscapes, tradition and local flavours.

Please arrive at your meeting point at least 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
For your overnight stay at the mountain refuge, please bring a set of bed sheets, a sleeping bag, a pillowcase, a towel, very warm clothing and a flashlight.
As the refuge does not have a restaurant, we will prepare dinner ourselves. If any participant follows a vegetarian or vegan diet, please let us know in advance.
For breakfast, individual snacks will be provided for everyone. You are also welcome to bring any extra snacks you may want for breakfast or the hike.
